Birmingham Cello Group was established in March 2003 by cellists living, working and studying in the West Midlands . The ensemble intend to use the help and support of Arts Funds, Lottery Programmes and other charitable foundations, to promote the works available for cello ensembles and to promote the cello itself as an ensemble instrument.

Concert programmes contain a wide variety of music dating back to the Baroque era, right through to the contemporary works of today. Such concerts will include pieces such as Bachianas Brasileiras by Villa-Lobos, Music for 8 Cellos and Five Timpani by Andrew Downes and Pablo Casals; Les Rois Mages. Other pieces will include arrangements of symphonies and well known musicals.

The group intends to provide opportunities for high quality cellists of all ages to perform in cello groups of various sizes, with the intention to perform up to three times a year as a large ensemble, but will also put on further concerts in smaller venues, of 'cello quartets or octets, all of which will take place around Birmingham and the surrounding Midlands. The ensemble currently comprises up to 40 cellists, and they rehearse regularly leading up to any event, at various locations.
