Alastair Smith

I am an experienced orchestral bassoonist with a wide range of repertoire over the first, second and contrabassoon parts. I hold a DipABRSM in performance (awarded September 2009).

I have been an active member of the following orchestras over the last 10 years, playing first bassoon in all the orchestras and in many cases taking the lead:

  • 1999-2003: Southampton Youth Orchestra
  • 2000-2003: Winchester Youth Orchestra
  • 2001-2004: Southampton Pops Orchestra
  • 2003-2007: University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra (UWSO), playing all bassoon parts including contrabassoon
  • 2008-date: Cambridge Graduate Orchestra

  • Second bassoon in Stravinsky's Symphony of Winds; Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre; Verdi's Requiem
  • Second bassoon in Respighi's Pines of Rome; Strauss' The Queen's Laces
  • Contrabassoon in Mahler's Symphonies No. 1 and 2; Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 and Festival Overture; Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
